I arrived to Metz, France with the group of students I met in Paris on Sunday. The train trip wasn’t bad but it was a pain carrying our luggage around. There was only one event of interest: While we were waiting in the train station at Paris to board, two guards with machine guns came up to me and cornered me, despite that I had been in the center of a group of students. It scared me because it was clear that they had a vested interest in only me. They started rambling off in French while the other students looked at my confused. All I could think to say was, “I’m sorry, I don’t speak French.” They looked at each other for a moment, said a few more words in French and then just left. Everyone immediately started asking me questions about what had happened but I had no idea what had provoked, what they wanted or why they left. They didn’t come back. I had the feeling they were looking for a girl my age and maybe mistook me for her?
When we arrived in Metz, Bertrand, the director of our program, met us with his assistant Clara and escorted us out. He’s a very nice guy and sometimes I feel bad that we take up so much of his time asking for dumb questions and making requests. We now affectionately call him “Bert” amongst ourselves. Bert took us to the place where we’ll be staying. I met some French students here who tried to explain that it isn’t a dorm, apartment or hostel. It’s just a place where students can stay and get cheap affordable housing. I have no idea what kind of a place it is other than that.
Each student has their own room and bathroom. There’s a desk, a bed, mini refrigerator and a closet and that’s about it. I moved myself in quickly and unpacked all of my things to feel more at home. I actually like my room a lot. I’m on the first floor and was nice to have a space all my own. Living with others and always being unsure about whether you’re bothering them or intruding on their space can get tiresome. Here, I can relax, stay up all night, have snacks in my room, keep it messy and take showers and go to the bathroom whenever I want. I’ve missed having this since I left and I am looking forward to my new apartment in August. I made a short video as soon as I entered my room.
On Friday I repacked my bag and got ready to travel to Paris in the morning. I spent the day vacuuming my room and making sure I didn’t forget anything. That night Ray took Karen and I out for dinner and drinks. We ended up back at the Living Room. The food was really great. Ray insisted I try a drink and ordered me a “Porn Star” martini. It was a fruity drink with champagne on the top. I was really sour tasting and I didn’t like it very much. He then ordered me a “Strawberry Queen” martini which tasted a lot like a strawberry milkshake but the alcohol wasn’t very good. I would have preferred just the strawberry milkshake.
On Saturday morning, I woke up at 5 am to catch my flight to Paris. I was sad saying good bye to Ray and Karen but hopefully I will see them again soon. Ray took me to the airport in the Hummer, in true American style. I missed not having my usual croissant, or three, with jam for breakfast. I got on my plane on time and thankfully wasn’t charged for my heavy luggage this time around. When I arrived in Paris, I needed to take the RER train line to Gare Du Nord. When I got to the train with my ticket, I was pretty sure I had found the right train but no one was getting on it. There weren’t any other trains and the airport is the last spot on the map so I figured it had to be the right one. I got on the train and found a seat and was approached by a Japanese family who asked if the train was going to Paris. They only spoke a little English and I only speak a little Japanese but we worked it out between the two of us.
Paris turned out much differently than the image I had in my head. I don’t think we were staying in a nice area but the city as a whole was extremely dirty and crowded. I’m sure if I stayed in a very expensive it would have been different but there were rats in the subway system, huge crowds pushing and shoving and lots of graffiti. It wasn’t how I pictured Paris.
When I arrived at Hotel Richmond, I didn’t see any of the students I was supposed to meet. I was worried that they didn’t wait for me and I started to get a little mad but before I could get too anxious, my friend came downstairs and met me. I found out they booked a room for five people and already had 5 people sleeping in it. The hotel told me I could pay 15 euro to add a cot to the bedroom so I did so. They then let me know that they were out of cots! I was more than frustrated now that I didn’t have a bed to sleep in for the night but it was too late to find another place and Hotel Richmond was completely booked for the night. I just slept on the floor. When I went to ask the hotel for at least an extra comforter and blankets, they told me they didn’t have any but that I could walk around the corner to the nearby hotel and borrow sheets from them. I was a little confused and so was the other hotel but sure enough, they let me bother a sort of thick quilt and a bed sheet. Thankfully I brought a little pillow for myself. It wasn’t comfortable but we only slept for a few hours anyways and it would have been very time consuming and expensive to find another place to stay for me that night.
So, while we were in Paris, the plan was to visit Versailles. We got an all day metro ticket and hopped on a train to Versailles. It was relatively close by. Versailles was beautiful but I wish we would have spent a little more time at it. It was very crowded and busy and I missed out on seeing the gardens.
When we returned, everyone was hungry for dinner but I had eaten a big lunch and some snacks at Versailles so I wasn’t really in the mood for dinner. I did take the opportunity to order a delicious nutella and banana crepe from a little shop. It was delicious and completely worth the 3 euro. It was so good, that I think I will get another crepe when I return to Paris!! I even took a picture:
As it got later, our little group of students wanted to return to the Eiffel Tower for the night to see it light up. We stopped at a little grocery store and got purchased a few bottles of wine, some crackers and cheese. We got to the tower around 9:30 pm but it was still light out and really crowded! We found a spot to set up our little picnic and hung out. The tower lit up at 10:00 pm but it was still kind of light out. For the first five minutes, it sparkled but then the flashing lights went out. They came back on again at 11:00 pm and by then, it was dark out and it looked so pretty. I took some video and pictures of the tower. There were also tons of guards around the tower carrying huge machine guns. That was pretty freaky.
We stayed and hung out for a while. There was a group of French guys sitting near us that got very drunk. Half way through the night they started throwing chunks of grass at one of the guys in our group. It was really obnoxious but I didn’t let it bother me too much. Later they started throwing empty cans and stuff too. It was annoying but hey, maybe they say the French are rude for a reason. Those guys definitely were but overall, they aren’t really representative of French people. If they were the only French people I met my whole trip however, I would have a very negative opinion.
On the way home, a few of us had to go to the bathroom. Two of the girls went pee at the park in public (mind you they were a bit drunk and had been doing hooka as well). I really wasn’t into that and asked where a nearby restroom was. One of the other girls said a restroom that you pay for was done the street so I told them I would meet back with them. The pay restroom turned out to be more like a port-a-potty and it was free. An electronic door opens and you step inside and then the door shuts behind you. I got in and to my horror, the bathroom was SOOOOO incredibly disgusting!! I won’t go into details but it was BAD. Before I could turn around and leave though, I was locked in by the stupid electronic door thing. Ugh, so nasty. When I managed to escape, my ENTIRE group was standing outside and made a big scene, cheering for me. I’m pretty sure they got a glimpse of how nasty it was inside. What a terribly embarrassing and disgusting memory to add to my trip. When we returned everyone was very tired and went to bed immediately. It was about 1:30 am. I felt like I need an hour long shower but I feel asleep on my little pad on the floor. We woke up early the next morning and caught a train to Metz where our professor met us. The trip was pretty uneventful for me. Next chapter: Metz.
Once we returned from London, I spent the next day touring Bristol. I visited the huge cathedral in the city and there was an Anne Frank exhibition going on at the time. Afterward, I toured the shopping center and checked out the University of Bristol. All of the buildings in Bristol are very big and very old. On the way back home, I stopped at Cabot Tower. It’s on the top of a huge hill which was a grueling walk up but you could see almost all of Bristol. The tower was closed so I couldn’t go inside but I snapped this funny photo.
The following day was a Wednesday and honestly, I was tired and wanted a day off from touring. I had been away a full week by now and had traveled nonstop every day. I laid in on Wednesday, watched satellite TV, did my laundry and cleaned up my room. Yeah, it was kind of a boring day but Karen has over 500 television channels! The Hewitt’s apartment is so pretty. It’s a pent house apartment on the top floor of their building which big windows all around and a nice porch to hang out on. It’s decorated in a very modern style and really clean. My bed was also extremely comfortable. I made a little video about the apartment so you can see where I stayed.
On Thursday, I got up late and visited the Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol. The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Avon Gorge, and linking Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in North Somerset, England. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it is a landmark that is used as a symbol of Bristol. The bridge was completed in 1864. I took a bunch of photos from the bridge which can be seen below and also had fish and chips at a cafe nearby!
After visiting Clifton, I went shopping at Cabot Circus. I read that there are over 350 stores in the new Bristol shopping center. There are so many stores to choose from but of course I went to Primark, which is the British equivalent of a Walmart clothing store. Jordan teased me earlier about the store and how he wouldn’t be caught dead in it but hey, I’m strapped for cash and there were a lot of really good deals in there! I got a pair ballet flats and some tights for 6 pounds. I went next door then to Peacocks, which is basically the same kind of store but a little classier. I got a shirt and a purse for 20 pounds, which wasn’t great but I really liked both. On the way back, I took a few pictures of the local graffiti. There are a lot of very popular and famous graffiti artists in and around England. Below was my favorite:
We woke up early on Sunday morning and caught a train to London. The trip took about two hours and we arrived at about noon. We had an early lunch in Convent Gardens. Covent Garden is the only area of London licensed for street entertainment and because of this, there were many street performers out and about. Below is a few pictures of the performers. Most of them had pretty clever shows in order to make them stand out.
For more photos, please go to my album here which includes all of my photos from London. After lunch, we went and checked in at our hotel. We stayed at a Radisson hotel. The rooms were small but that’s expected in a big city. The hotel was really nice. We left our bags there and headed out to Leicester Square and then headed to Madam Tussaud’s famous wax museum. I honestly thought the wax museum was going to be a little lame but by this point, I was really excited to see something. Madam Tussauds turned out to be a lot of fun and was an excellent attraction. I would definitely recommend it to someone else. The wax figures are eerily realistic and there is even a little ride inside which takes you through the history of London. There’s also a scary section of the museum which includes famous murderers like Jack the Ripper but I was too freaked out to go through it and skipped that part. The figures look so realistic that it’s hard to tell if they are real or not.
Here are some of the best photos from Madam Tussuad’s.
After Madam Tussauds, we headed back to the hotel, rested for a few hours, took a shower and went out to Chinatown for dinner. Chinatown was pretty cool. There were tons of roasted ducks hanging in the window which freaked Karen out. We had duck and orange chicken for dinner. It was very good and authentic Chinese food.
The next morning, we woke up early and got an open top bus. It was a great idea because there is no way you can see all of the sights on foot. They also told us a lot of interesting commentary. They showed up the school where Daniel Radcliffe AKA Harry Potter went to school and the first ever Hard Rock Cafe. (I thought they were originally American!)
We hopped off at Buckingham Palace because it was raining on us but as soon as we got off it stopped. The Palace was beautiful and I went and saw the Queen’s collection which included paintings by Rembrandt, suits of armor and tons of porcelain. I then went over to the Royal Mews and saw the royal stable, the coaches the Queen rides in and the royal collection of Bentleys and BMW’s.
After the Palace, we hopped back on the bus and headed towards the Tower of London. By this time, we didn’t have much time left before our train trip home at 5:00 pm. I didn’t expect the Tower of London to be so huge. We saw the Royal Jewels there and King Henry’s collection of armor but that was only a small portion of the sights. By then, we had to hop back on the bus, get our luggage, grab a quick bite to eat and take the Tube to our train. The tube is basically the same as the subway in New York city.
Although I didn’t really get to spend much time at each place, I definitely saw almost everything in London. I’ll add photos and video soon!
On Saturday, we got up and went to Bath, England. Karen and Jordan weren’t interested in seeing the ancient Roman baths so I went by myself while they shopped. It was really great. Here are some of my favorite photos form the day. You can see all of the photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38747694@N03/sets/72157618703450053/
I really enjoyed visiting the ancient roman baths. Outside of the the baths there was a restaurant called the Pump room where you could drink some of the water from the baths. Now, normally I might try this but $5 for a cup of bad nasty water is a little much. I have some video of this as well as some bad commentary by myself around the baths. Sorry if I sound idiotic. Hopefully I’ll improve throughout the trip.
After the Roman baths and a little lunch, we headed over to the Thermae Bath spa, the only natural thermal spa in Britain. It was a bit pricey at 22 pounds for two hours but I had planning on going since I left America. The spa is four stories, with an open air thermal pool on the roof that overlook the city. It was beautiful. It was cool outside in Britain so sitting in the warm water was nice. On the third level, there were four saunas and a weird little foot bath area where you could stick your feet in a tub of warm water… On the second floor, there was a mineral bath where I spent most of the two hours and the ground floor was the locker room. Thankfully Jordan went in with me or else it might have been a rather boring two hours.
Once we returned from Bath, Jordan and I took showers and got ready to go out for the evening with Karen. We walked to a nice little place called the Living Room on the other side of the river where they live and Jordan and Karen had drinks. They tried to get me to drink something but I wasn’t really into it. I was really hoping we could visit a dance club and after drinks, Jordan agreed to go to Oceana, the only dance club in the area. I had a really good time. There were a bunch of hen do’s and people in costumes. Pink, the singer, even was there! That was pretty exciting. The club was different from American clubs. Guys danced with each other and there wasn’t really any ‘booty dancing’ at all that is typical in America. The hen parties and costumes added a fun touch though. The club was huge and had three different rooms to dance in with different music. Overall, I had a great time on Saturday but ended up getting back really late.
I finally arrived at Bristol on Friday morning. I needed to be boarded on the plane by 6:05 am so I woke up at 3:45 am. I was worried that the hotel wouldn’t wake me up on time so I kept waking up during the night. Getting to the airport was easy. There was a free shuttle from my hotel to the airport. I got at the airport by 4:15 am and went to check in. Apparently my bag was 9 kilos over the limit and I had to pay 135 euro fee!! That’s about $200 I believe. It was really irritating. I decided right then that I hated Ryanair airlines. So I got to the gate at 5:15 and waited. And waited. We didn’t start boarding the plane until 6:20 am… 15 minutes after the deadline. I was mad because this was the same flight I tried to catch yesterday morning and had I known it was this late, I would have easily been able to make it yesterday but they wouldn’t let me on. :/ Enough about airplanes until the trip home.
I met Karen at the airport in Bristol pretty easily and she gave me a ride home to their place. They live in a three bedroom apartment. It’s very nice and has very modern décor. I even get my own bedroom and the bed is really soft and comfortable. Ray, Karen’s husband, is away on a business trip until Monday so I haven’t met him yet. Her 17 year old son, Jordan, was home though from school so I met him.
During the day we went out and explored Bristol. They showed me where everything was so that I could get around and take the bus next week when Karen went back to work and Jordan went back to school. We mostly went shopping it seemed. Overall, it was a nice day. When we returned, we watched Britain’s Got Talent and a pretty vulgar movie called Dirty Sanchez. Then we watched “Take the Stage” or something like that. One of those American dance movies and had lasagna for dinner. Definitely better than being alone in Ireland!
I left from Orlando on Wednesday. Erik’s mom was kind enough to take me to the airport. I didn’t realize that I got there way too early and ended up waiting about two hours to board the plane. The flight from Orlando to New York City had so many kids on it! There was a kid in every row and two in some. When I got to my seat, a two year was sitting in it between his mom and his dad. I didn’t really want to break up the party so I told them I would sit wherever the child’s seat was. The flight was nice and I ended up with a window seat which is always a plus.
Towards the end of the flights, one of the flight attendants came up to my original seat and asked if the mom sitting there was Tiffany Bell. They wanted to know if I needed wheel chair assistance off of the plane. I’m not sure why but they had me down as needing assistance to get off the plane. That was a little strange but I told them “No, I don’t need assistance,” and that was the end of that.
On the way to my flight from New York City to Dublin, Ireland, I had been looking forward to eating at this awesome Asian place in the Jet Blue terminal. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time and missed out on some really good pineapple fried rice. I’m definitely getting some on the way home.
The Aer Lingus flight was a little disappointing. The seats were small, there weren’t personal mini televisions and the aircraft looked a little old which is never a good thing. There were some positive things though. First of all, they played Bride Wars on the television. I had to squint to see it but at least I go to watch most of it. Secondly, we got a meal on the plane. It was so cute! I took a picture of it. I know the girl next to me thought I was crazy photographing my meal but oh well. Unfortunately my miniDVD-R decided it didn’t want to work anymore and now displays “recording disabled.” I googled it to try and diagnose the problem but basically my awesome photos are lost.
The two meal options were Irish beef stew or chicken and rice. I didn’t want to risk getting the Irish stew but I was tempted. I got the chicken but it pretty much tasted like Irish beef stew… :/
I arrived in Dublin at 5:30 am… 15 minutes late. My next flight departed at 6:35 am and I needed to be at the gate by 6:05 am which might have been doable but I had to get my bag from Aer Lingus and check it back in to my next flight. I was so close to making it. If my flight would have been on time, I would have probably made it.
Regardless, I found myself stranded at the Dublin International Airport. The next flight to Bristol was leaving in NINE hours and they wanted about $400 for the ticket! My original ticket was $50. I didn’t have a lot of options. They told me that if I flew out the next morning, I could get my ticket for $100. After calling Ray Hewitt, I decided to just get a hotel in Dublin for the night and see Dublin during the day. It was unplanned but it wasn’t a totally ruined day. I got a hotel for 79 euros with a free shuttle. I spent the day walking around the city, mostly lost. For some reasons, they don’t feel that they need to put street signs at all the intersections. I finally found the Dublin Castle but it was closed. This was pretty much the tone of the whole day. Oh, did I mention it was raining most of the time and cold? *sigh* Anyways, here’s a pretty funny video I did at my hotel room:
I’m primarily spending the day packing today and testing out different things I plan to bring or use on my trip so I thought I would write up a post to make sure everything’s working correctly. I added my itinerary to the website so check it out. Unfortunately, I can’t find my regular camera so I may have to rely on the camcorder I intend to bring. I finally figured out how to use the miniDVD camcorder, close the miniDVD’s, upload them to the computer, convert them to .mpeg form and edit them so that was an accomplishment on its own. My etsy shop will be closed today or tomorrow until I get back from my big trip.
In the future, I’ll try and always add either photos or video and I’ll try and add a post every day so check back daily!
